COVID-19 Resources Spring 2021

What is PHC Doing About COVID-19 and how can I be involved?

  1. Send a picture of you getting tested for COVID to @calphc to be entered into a raffle for a Visa or DoorDash gift card. You can enter every week up to two times a week.

  2. PHC is asking chapters to submit their COVID-19 testing rates. Get tested and let your chapter know!

  3. Read our Statement on COVID-19

  4. Read our COVID-19 Guidelines

Statement on COVID-19

The Panhellenic Executive Council remains committed to preventing the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that several members of our community have been deviating from community guidelines regarding the pandemic. We would like to take this opportunity to remind the Panhellenic community that it is extremely important that you refrain from attending social gatherings with individuals from outside your household and strive to get tested twice a week.

Failing to uphold community guidelines surrounding COVID-19 is incredibly dangerous and problematic for a variety of reasons:

  1. Anyone can get COVID-19 and each individual’s reaction to COVID-19 is different. Although there have been no deaths or hospitalizations on our campus, there have been deaths and hospitalizations of college students at other universities as a result of contracting COVID-19. You are not immune.

  2. By putting yourself at risk, you are also putting others individuals at risk who support our community. Panhellenic chapter houses employ members of the community and putting those individuals at risk is reckless and, frankly, unacceptable.

  3. We know many of you are excited about the end of the Stay at Home Order in California. Continuing to spread the virus could prevent Bay Area restaurants, bars, and other indoor facilities from opening. This would not only affect your social lives and your ability to be social in facilities outside of your home, but would also drastically affect the local economy.

  4. We are a community that is mostly white and mostly affluent. By neglecting COVID-19 guidelines, we are flaunting our privilege in perhaps the most dangerous way possible. Consider the message you are sending to members of our community and the larger Bay Area community who have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 when you choose not to follow public health recommendations.

  5. Under non-COVID circumstances, there are very specific safety precautions that are taken at PHC and IFC social events. That is not happening right now because none of the social events occurring are sanctioned by PHC or IFC. By attending social events, you are exposing yourself to extra risk related to incidents of SVSH and alcohol or drug use. If you feel you are not putting yourself at risk, just know you are normalizing poor risk practices and putting others at risk.

We know it is hard to follow the guidelines right now. We are all struggling. The reality is, however, that not following the guidelines has a far greater impact than any of us can really conceptualize. We urge you to continue to take this pandemic seriously and do what you can to protect yourself and the people around you.

Spring 2021 Panhellenic Community Guidelines

Every member should recognize and acknowledge that the Spring 2021 will look very different than any other semester. All members of the Panhellenic Community are expected to follow all state, county, city and university guidelines. It is extremely important to show respect for yourself and all members of the Panhellenic and Greek Community by following the guidelines listed below. We know it is difficult to abide by these guidelines, but is essential to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Community members who live in Berkeley are expected to:

Chapter Actions

  • Panhellenic chapters should not host any in-person events until public health directives and Panhellenic allows

  • Chapter presidents are strongly encouraged to work with their housing corporations to require testing for residents of sorority houses

  • It is the responsibility of every individual within the chapter to hold their sisters accountable and strive to getting tested

  • The PHC Vice President of Risk will ask chapters to report to her the percentage of members who were tested in the past week

Individual Actions

  • Wear a face covering at all times when outside and comply with individual chapter property face covering expectations

  • Practice physical/social distancing (6 ft. apart) as much as possible

  • Practice good hand-washing hygiene by washing frequently and for 20 seconds with soap and water, or utilize hand sanitizer if hand washing facilities are not available

  • Do NOT attend events with anyone outside of your residence whenever possible (includes fraternity parties, social gatherings at unaffiliated houses, large scale events, small hangouts at other Greek households, or other parties)

  • Do NOT visit individuals in other Greek houses (all PHC houses have no-guest policies)

  • Prioritize self care! Strengthening your immune system by getting plenty of SLEEP, nutrition, stress-relief, and exercise

  • Stay home if you are feeling sick or experiencing any of these symptoms

  • Stay home if a member of you household has a confirmed COVID-19 infection or has been in close contact with someone who had a confirmed COVID-19 infection

  • All members of the PHC community currently residing in Berkeley (both liv-ins as well as live-outs with house access) are strongly encouraged to get tested twice a week. Testing is available at Memorial Stadium and the RSF.

  • It is especially important to get tested if exhibiting any of the symptoms associated with COVID or close contact with someone who has been exposed to someone who has COVID-19.

  • Report to the Tang Center if you have a positive COVID-19 test. Reporting can be done completely anonymously by calling (510) 643-8227. Reporting a positive test helps the Tang Center complete contact tracing and minimize the spread of COVID-19. You, or anyone you know or have interacted with, will not be subject to punitive action for reporting your test.

  • If you or someone you know attended a social event and is involved in a risk-related event (alleged incidence of SVSH, poor risk practices, community development, or house culture) coming forward with that information to PHC or your chapter president will not result in punitive actions. We are dedicated to upholding the safety of the PHC community over enforcing punitive measures.

We will continue to update these guidelines as the situation evolves and we will be updating you with any changes.
